We're going BACK TO THE ROOTS!Project X 2023 is going back to where it all started: Sweden. For this year’s venue, we wanted to go big (because of course!) and showcase everything that the beautiful Swedish summer has to offer. Situated a stone’s throw away from Gothenburg on Sweden’s iconic west coast (= best coast) you will find Koitjärve: a scout campsite by the shores of the quaint Lygern lake, embedded in lush and picturesque surroundings in the nature reserve area Fjärås,
For the untrained eye and IKEA aficionados, the funny dots over the letters might indicate the name of Koitjärve being very Swedish indeed. However, Koitjärve has a rich and deeply interesting history that points otherwise. Even though the venue itself encapsulates the true essence of Sweden, it is actually of Estonian origin. Koitjärve, which means Lake of Dawn in Estonian, hints at unforgettable memories for those ambassadors who will be awake as the day dawns in the early morning hours (we are in the northern part of the continent after all, so prepare for lots of light!). History Koitjärve’s origin story is one of a place of camaraderie, cultural gatherings, learning and a unique meeting place for the like-minded. Right at the end of World War II, Estonia was occupied by the Soviet Union. Forced to flee, over 25 000 Estonias ventured over the Baltic Sea to find refuge in Sweden. Already in the refugee camps, scout gatherings began to take place. Soon thereafter, Estonian refugees went on to create Scout organizations all over Sweden, and in 1960 the land for Koitjärve was purchased by Estonian refugees. Ever since, the campsite has been frequently used by both Estonians and Swedes for various gatherings such as scout camps, festivals, weddings, and has been the host of worldwide international scout camps (maxing over 1000 people). Over the years Koitjärve grew in size and more buildings and features became part of the campsite. It now consists of over 15.5 hectare of land with four buildings and a sauna house with a private beach (!). Much like YFU, Koitjärve has been built by hard working volunteers wanting to create a place of cultural gatherings. We now welcome you, our fellow PX ambassadors, to bring that one-of-a-kind international and intercultural spirit to Koitjärve at Project X 2023. About Hold on, what about the actual venue though? What does it offer and is it gonna be worthy of the Project X 10-year anniversary? The definitive answer for that is YES. Koitjärve of course offers a large camp site area for our tents, that can comfortably fit all of us X-ambassadors. In addition, there is a designated outside party area with a stage (and a roof in case of rain), a beach volleyball court, a large kitchen, free to use canoes, inside areas (that we can decide to use or not), and of course, several showers and toilets. As the icing on the cake we can this year boast with a – hold your horses – sauna house and a private beach (perfect for watching the sunset or skinny dipping). There is no doubt that this place – located in the scenic nature by lake Lygern – has it all and then some. |

It's a government-owned monopoly and unfortunately also quite expensive. If you go there make sure to bring your passport and to be 20 years old or else you will come back to the camp empty-handed.
