Frequently Asked Questions:
who can participate?
This is an event for YFUers. We welcome YFUers from everywhere and from everywhere, be they volunteers, former exchange students, former (or current) host family, staff, etc.
My sister/friend/significant other is not part of this organisation, can they come with me?
No. This has long been a topic of discussion and debate in the community and the consensus has been that this event is not open to outsiders. There are plenty of parties, camping nights and other fun events you can attend together.
I recently returned from exchange but I haven't turned 18 yet. Can I participate?
Unfortunately not. This event has been decided to be over 18 only. You are welcome to join us next year! :)
ALCOHOL AND CIGARETTES
What is the age limit to buy alcohol or cigarettes in Sweden?
To buy beer and wine at the Swedish state monopoly Systembolaget the age limit is 20. Same goes for hard liquor.
If you happen to swing by a restaurant or a bar on your way to and from the venue, however, the drinking age is (typically) 18.
Sweden is very strict with drinking and driving, so if you drink don't think about driving!!!
You can buy cigarettes and snus (google it) at the age of 18.

Where can I buy alcohol?
In Sweden you can only buy alcohol at Systembolaget. Systembolaget is a government owned store with high taxes on their products and therefore everything is unfortunately quite expensive. The closest Systembolaget from the venue is in Kungsbacka (20km). If you want to buy alcohol at Systembolaget you have (!) to a) bring a valid ID (passport, an official national ID card or a Nordic driver's license) and b) be at least 20 years old. Don't even bother to enter the store if you don't fulfill those two criteria (and beware: even if you check off these boxes yourself, if you enter with someone who is suspected to be underage you might yourself be stopped from buying any alcohol)
DONATIONS AND FUNDING
Is there a participation fee?
In order to pay for the venue and some additional minor expenses in order to ensure a safe and well-organized event it is asked of each applicant to donate 22-30 EUR.
More information about the donation and payment options can be found here.

What about COVID19?
Given the current endemic nature of COVID19 in its different variants, as well as the current case numbers and situation in Europe, we have decided that no specific Covid-related measures will be taken on the part of the organizing team (other than, of course, good sanitation and ample possibility for disinfecting one's hands). Unless the situation changes drastically, what we'll strongly encourage is that that everyone gets vaccinated in accordance with your national health agency's recommendations and individual responsibility.
What's "allemansrätten" and why is it so awesome?
The freedom to roam, or "everyman's right", is the general public's right to access certain public or privately owned land, lakes, and rivers for recreation and exercise. In addition, some of the things it includes:
So basically, both for our event, and for your continued journey before and after PX, it allows for maximum flexibility to explore Sweden to its fullest!

- You can put up a tent.
- You are allowed to collect flowers, mushrooms and berries.

What do things generally cost?
Except the voluntary donation, there is no official charge to join. Therefore, if you walk or hitch-hike to Project X and eat nothing but roots and berries it won't cost anything. Conversely, if you take your private jet and have your own pop-up restaurant with a private chef put up on site, you will probably need some money. Generally, you can expect the expenses to be the cost of your trip as well as food and drinks during your stay.
We will at a later stage provide a more detailed list of price level in Sweden for various PX essentials (drinks, gasoline, inflatable animals, etc.). For now, however, you can probably plan by the following principle: unless you come from Norway, any country you pass through on your way to Sweden is probably going to be cheaper.
*The official currency in Sweden is SEK (100 SEK ~ 9 EURO / 210 CZK / 66 DKK)*
Basically all shops and stores also accept credit card, so it's very unlikely you'll need any cash.

What Does it mean to be an x Ambassador?
A true X Ambassador tries to spread the idea of Project X among all YFUers they know and ensures that the summer of 2023 will go down in history as the most excellent summer ever in YFU!
X Ambassadors form an X with their arms when they hear the letter X pronounced in a word or alone. It is also common, as a consequence, that X-ambassadors use a lot of words containing X when speaking with each other.
An X Ambassador asks questions such as:
An X Ambassador remembers that they are what makes Project X great and will contribute in whatever ways they can to make it so!

An X Ambassador asks questions such as:
- Will there be a ball pit?
- Will I be allowed to run around in a costume formed as a pear?
- Can we have Swedish House Mafia playing live during Project X as part of their comeback tour?
- Will all awesome volunteers that I know be there?

If you want to follow the updates from the organizers and stay involved with the vibrant PX community, there are a few ways to do so:
- Join the Facebook group. It's been going strong since 2015 – and is still being posted in regularly by both the organizing team and X ambassadors sharing memories from previous PXes, and hype for future ones!
- Subscribe to the official (and very awesome) YFU Volunteer Newsletter: The Globetrotter. If you're not on Facebook or trying to reduce your social media presence, this is a great way to make sure you don't miss the most important Project X announcements every year!
- We're now on Instagram, where us at @therealprojectxworld. Please note that we do vet everybody's "YFUerness" before accepting follow requests, so don't be discouraged if it might take a few days for us to get to you :)
